Evaluation

My overall ident campaigns.

Is for the CITV channel. Their idents are bright, colourful and easy to understand. Their animations involve the CITV logo. One of their current ident animations is when 'C' from CITV finds a treasure chest under the ocean.

Freeview has asked to make an ident a 60 second ident or two 30 second idents from one of the channels on their TV platform. I chose to do one 1-minute ident. I wanted to focus on one ident according to the brief and to my liking, especially as stop motion cut out animation can be time consuming.  My CITV ident was inspired by the TV programme Art attack which was aired on CITV and by the painter Bob Ross. The story of my cut-out animation is that 'C' from CITV is impersonating Bob Ross and is painting the coconut from the TV programme Art Attack the coconuts name is 'Vincent Van Coconut'. However, he later takes a step back and realises he hates the painting. C then chews up the whole canvas and spits it out. C stomps over the crumpled chewed-up ball of paper. A speech bubble appears, C hovers over it and paints the bubble revealing the CITV logo. This keeps the young audience entertained while still informing them about what channel they are watching and what TV programme is up next.

Visuals and audio

I imported all of my pictures into final cut pro. However, my clips were too long so I shortened them and decided which ones to keep and delete. I kept record of this in my rushes log.

After gaining audience feedback I moved onto editing the final ident. I did not have to make any drastic changes to my ident. I added some effects and transitions etc. to make it a bit more appealing. And put sound effects and music onto my ident. Such as when there is paper crumbling a sound effect is added or when paint is used there is sound effects of paint splashes. I have used copyright free music which was fun and upbeat throughout the whole video. This was done to attract the viewer not only visually but also audibly. To keep the audience engaged and providing them a better experience. I also put the CITV logo image at the end of the ident to really it seems like a bit more like how the ident would look if it were to be really put on the CITV channel. Because it is conventional.

I used mainly the same type of shot, wide shot. However, I have still used a bit of different types of shot types such as close up and zoom ins to give it variety and to keep the audience's attention.

I did this because I wanted the animation to be cohesive, whilst still keeping it engaging for the audience. I think adding effects in the editing process and the use of diegetic and non-diegetic sounds really makes the ident attract attention from the viewers. And telling a story through picture cut out drawings in an animation really makes it engaging for the audience as they need to watch the full ident to understand the situation.

In summary I have made an ident for CITV channel on Freeview by completing all the necessary pre-production, production and postproduction while considering the brief. The 30 second Ident I have made is a cut out animation as this is something a bit artier and would appeal to kids, especially the bright colours and the stop motion. This may give them inspiration to try something like this as well. The sound effects help tell the young audience more about what is happening on screen and makes it goofier and more enjoyable for the younglings.

Similarities and differences between the original idea and the final idea.

My original idea to was to just have 'C' as the main character in whatever ident I produce. And I wanted it to make it fun. But I was lacking inspiration, so I went ahead to google and typed up some CITV programmes and I saw that art attack was on the list. This is when I got a little more inspiration and decided that I wanted to do something arty and creative but still wanted to keep it a little simple, and clear enough for the young audience to understand. This is when the idea of an animation inspired by the mix of Art Attack and the painter Bob Ross struck me. I thought about it for a little bit. However, I decided against it when I went on YouTube and saw a lot of the animations was stop motion, like Legos or play dough. But because I didn't have Legos or any play doughs that fit the theme. I landed on the idea of a cut out animation.

Post production report and pre production

Post productions process - I edited all the shots of my animation cut outs and then uploaded the draft on to YouTube. I then showed this to my friends and gathered audience feedback on it. I then used my audience feedback to make a feedback analysis on what I will act on and what I will not act on based on the audience feedback. After that I went back to final cut pro and started to make changes to my ident according to my liking and the audience feedback.

Post production edits and transitions - I did not put many transitions except maybe a few, as my ident is a cut out animation. I cut out a few unwanted shots and added a few effects to make it look more interesting. I also added the CITV logo on the top right corner of the screen.

Post production sound - I went onto yt and found copyright free sounds to use on my ident. I made them into Mp3 files and imported them onto final cut pro to use on my ident. I mainly focused on finding sound effects that would best match the scene on screen. To make it look lively and fun I used upbeat copyright free music that is playing

Feedback analysis

Feedback I will act on

Pravini said that my ident isn't clear enough for the audience as the audience might not know what to expect when first seeing the ident. I will try to shorten my ident a little and add a picture of the CITV channel logo in my video for my final ident. She also said that she would add more animations on screen. So, I will add some time of short digital animation with the CITV logo that's about three seconds long.

Afsarah said that in my ident the shots had something in front of it. Since I cannot re-record due to time crunch, I will try my best to instead crop and zoom or remove any unwanted shots to make it look cleaner and clearer.

Feedback I will not act on

Afsarah told me to shorten the video or make it into two serrated idents as it can be jarring to watch such a long ident of nothing but just a cut out animation. However, I will not be doing that as my ident has to be exactly one minutes long. Also, she told me to re-record some of the shots, however I simply do not have the time to do so. I will instead try to work with what I have and make the best use of that.

Audience feedback

I have asked Afsarah and Pravini to give me feedback on my first ident

The questions I asked them are:

What are your thoughts on this ident as a whole?

Is the concept and channel of the ident clear?

Is there anything that you would change or add?

What would you do differently if you were to remake this ident?

Afsarah -

1) it was well made and clear in the fact that it was meant for a kid's channel, not too complicated or sophisticated
2) yes
3) some of the shots could be a little clearer as the were some shots with a finger shown in the bottom left corner
4) maybe shorten the video a little or make it into two serrated idents as it was a little long to watch

Pravini -

1) It's quite straightforward because as an audience, I know what content to expect, as soon as I see the indent of a channel.

2) In my opinion it's not clear but it can be seen as creative. A person who's never seen the indent might not know what content to expect.

3) More animation to put into the genre, as it is a kids channel.

4) Depends on the channel that I work with, and the genre that they're going for and the sort of audience that it would be produced to.

Production Journey

I worked on my CITV ident by myself. This time around it was fairly easier for me to complete my pre-production, production, and postproduction work. As I am doing this type of work once more with more experience and knowledge.

At home in the holidays, I went through my shooting script. I hand drew, coloured and cut out all of the pieces that I would need for my ident. I then cleared out my room so I would have more space to work with. I also moved any wires that would get in my way of filming. And I put away anything that could be considered as a hazard or a threat. e.g., drinks, lamps, chair. I then started filming my ident. To make it looks like an animation, I moved my cut out little bit at a time and took a picture. This took some time, but it was a simple concept in theory, so I was alright with that for the most part. However, I did struggle with a few aspects still. One of them being is with trying to keep the lighting the same. Since, some of the pictures I would take would be brighter or dimmer than others. Which then ended up making it look inconsistent. Another thing I struggled with is not moving the camera so much when taking the picture manually. Moving the camera makes it seem more coherent. Nonetheless, I think that after retaking some of the pictures it all worked out in the end, and I had a phenomenal piece of work. And at times the camera work and lighting look's intentional because it is arty.

I then moved onto to editing. I needed to make a rough draft of my pictures. But it was too long as one picture was 10 mins long. So, I had to shorten it down a bit. Then uploaded the rough draft video on to YouTube. I then 1 week where I was not working on my ident, because I was helping my friend with hers. After all that was done, I started on my rushes log. Which took the longest to do and was the most tedious aspect of this project. I had to write the same thing over and over for a lot of the images and since there were so many pictures with little bit of movement it got tiring. So, I decided to take a break from that, and instead start working on my first draft. And then after I had finished with that and uploaded to that to YouTube as well. I went back to doing my rushed log. Which helped a lot as I was more focused this way. And also, it helped me to know what pictures I will keep and what ones I will discard. However, I did not get to finish my rushes log at school. So, I started to work on it in skl as I had access to the SD card I had used.

I then started to work on editing my first ident. I used the first draft and continued from that. Then I started looking for sound effects. But it was a bit more difficult to look for copyright free sound effects that actually sound good. So, I worked with what I had. I added in the music and diegetic sounds such as a paper being crumpled. I then added a bit of effects and transitions and that my first ident was done.

After that I had to gather audience feedback. I showed the video to my friends and got their responses on what they liked, and if it is clear enough to understand for them on what's happening in the ident. And how they would do things differently if they were to remake the ident etc.

Work plan

My aim is to finish 1 ident that is a minute long. I will need to use my time efficiently to get the best quality of work that I am satisfied with. I will be using my lessons at school to go home to film and then edit my work in school. And I will then draw, colour and cut those out to use it for my cut out animation. I will also need glue and arrange some of the pieces. When editing I will need to find music and sound effects for my CITV ident. Or I will have to make foley sounds to use as sound effects on my ident.

Week 1 - will be drawing, colouring cutting and arranging my cut outs for my idents.
Week 2 - will be using pictures to make my cut out stop motion animation ident.
Week 3 - will be piecing together my footage in final cut pro and adding sound effects and music.
Week 4 - will be completing my ident and receiving audience feedback on it.
Week 5 - will be using the audience feedback to make changes to or to fix my ident.
Week 6 - start my evaluation.
Week 7 - finish my evaluation and anything else that I have missed out on or need to fix.

Launch date and Activities

Launch date

The launch date for my CITV one minute ident will be in the summer of 2023. This is because my ident is for kids. It has bright colours and a summery feel to it. There is also a coconut character in the ident. This means kids will have more time in summer and so they might watch more TV.

This ident will help keep the young audience interested in the channel. And since it relates to the next programme on/already airing it is sure to grab their attention even more. The programme the ident is based on is Art Attack.

Activities

I will need a mac computer for my ident. As I will need the software final cut pro to edit. I will use Youtube for music and sound effects. And I might even create some foley sounds if needed.

Contingency plans

I will be filming at home. I will borrow equipment with permission from my teacher and take it home. My back up location will be in one of the school classrooms. I will film alone. However if I help or extra hand with something else I will ask if needed.

The props I will be needing to make this ident are my cut outs, a tripod and a camera with an SD hard in it.

I will then edit my ident using a mac on final cut pro in Mr Clarkes classroom.

Personnel

I am the only person working on my ident.

As mine is an animation cut out ident I will need to draw, colour, and cut everything out. I will then glue and arrange my pieces. After I finish making my ident, I will show it people and gather audience feedback. I will then use that feedback to fix anything or better my work. And then at last I will write an evaluation. I will talk about how it went, if it was difficult or easy to do etc.

14th of December will be my deadline.

And If I need help will anything I can ask Mrs Lowndes or Mr Magaadow.
